After having restarted Ubuntu about three times (because of another issue which is not relevant to mention here) today, the network icon suddenly reappeared. I haven't changed any system-settings today, just used VMware server, Terminal Services Client, OpenOffice Writer and Firefox 2.0.0.14 for work purposes.

I could imagine the issue could arise again after removing the notification-area and then adding it, but I'm not taking the risk at this moment because of the need to use my VPN-connections.
If needed I can add another account and remove it from there if it's relevant for further troubleshooting of his issue, so here my question whether this "bug?" should be closed or be troubleshooted further (in which case I'd need some instructions for producing/copying relevant log/configuration-files, etc).
