Bug Description

Binary package hint: nautilus

Put in a new, blank DVD disc. In Nautilus, under 'Places' > 'Blank DVD-R', this error appears:

Could not open location 'burn:///'
The default action does not support this protocol.

This means I can not select any optical drives when I have a blank CD-R or DVD-R in.

What's wrong?

$ gvfs-ls burn
The program 'gvfs-ls' is currently not installed. You can install it by typing:
sudo apt-get install gvfs-bin
bash: gvfs-ls: command not found

Is that what you wanted me to test?

Please install the gvfs-bin package and then re-run the command. The bin package contains programs that are vastly helpful for debugging GVFS-related problems such as this one. Thanks.

My Machine is an Ubuntu 8.04 system recently upgraded from 7.10 and I'm also having this problem. I have installed gvfs-bin and ran the requested command. It simply completed without any message.

$ which gvfs-ls
/usr/bin/gvfs-ls

$ gvfs-ls burn:
$

I found a work around, I click Places -> Home Folder and with "Tree" on the left side I can click "Blank CD-R Disc". The location line even says burn:///

It just seems to be the menu entry under Places that's giving this problem.

As Brian said, entering from some other place than the menu gives no error message!

could you run /usr/lib/gvfs/gvfsd -r on a command line, try to browse the burn location and copy the log to a comment?

The same error occurs, but '/usr/lib/gvfs/gvfsd -r' returns nothing.

My steps:
1) Ran '/usr/lib/gvfs/gvfsd -r' on the command line
2) Put in two blank DVD-Rs in both my DVD-ROM and DVD-RAM drives
3) Went to 'Places > Blank DVD-ROM Disc' and the same error appeared.
4) Went back to the command line to see that '/usr/lib/gvfs/gvfsd -r' returned nothing.
5) Manually went to 'burn:///' and that also returned nothing for '/usr/lib/gvfs/gvfsd -r'

I also found it interesting that only one DVD-R was detected. The other device says "Unable to mount location / No media in the drive".

The drives work perfectly fine in Windows.

The DVD-RAM (the one that detected my DVD-R is an LG, bought about 3 months ago) while the other one came with my Dell XPS Gen 5 in August 2005.

I will give you the model numbers of both upon request.

Yes, it appears to open 'burn:///' in Nautilus.

This is also happening to me, Ubuntu 8.04.1 updated 2 days ago.

Brasero still works, CD burning works, Nautilus CD burning works, but the Places menu is broken.

Sabastien, I apologize for taking so long to get back to you, but I'm using Xubuntu right now, so I had trouble finding an Ubuntu 8.04.1 desktop.

A fresh install of Ubuntu 8.04.1, however, does still have the same error when popping in a 'Blank DVD-ROM Disc'.

It appears that when clicking 'Places > CD/DVD Creator', Nautilus will open burn:///.

However, when clicking on 'Places > Blank DVD-ROM Disc', the following error still occurs:

Could not open location 'burn:///'
The default action does not support this protocol.

the bug is a minor one, there is a working cd burning entry in the same menu so it's low priority for a stable update, anybody is welcome to work on a stable update though
