Bug Description

Binary package hint: compiz

(Note I'm in ubuntu 8.04LTS) Whenever ubuntu uses 3d acceleration, my laptop dies. It works fine for a while, but it will inevitably die. What happens is that I'm working, and all of the sudden, my screen goes black, then random colors appear, then it goes black again. And the only way to reuse my laptop is to shut it down, and boot it up again. This does not just happen for compiz, it happens for any program. For example, this happens if I'm working on blender. In 7.10, compiz was disabled, because my graphics card, GM965/GL960, was blacklisted for not working, and my computer would crash within about a minute of using blender. When I upgraded to 8.04LTS, compiz started working, and so did blender. no problems. However, it has become unstable¸ and crashes. i'm sorry, but I have no idea why it happens.

To reproduce:
1. Get an HP Pavilion dv6626us, with the GM965/GL960 lintel mobile graphics card.
2. Instal ubuntuu 8.04LTS onto it.
3. Use it?
4. With 3d effects enabled, it will crash. -or- Use blender, and it will crash.

I'm sorry about step 3, but I have no idea what happened.

Hiya there :) Thanks for reporting this bug :) Could it be that compiz is the wrong package to file it against? (You said it crashes in Blender too without compiz even enables and that would indicate some underlying OpenGL related package that has trouble)

It cuold be, but it seemed like that was the best thing I could see to put it in. So, if there is a better one, could you tell me how to change it? (I would also like the problem resolved to :) ).

Please attach your /var/log/Xorg.0.log or Xorg.0.log.old following one of these crashes. Also, please collect a full backtrace - see http://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Backtracing for directions.

[This is an automatic notice.]

We'd like to forward your bug upstream, however upstream requires
that you first test it against their newer driver code.

To save you the effort of building the driver from source, we've built
packages for the driver and its new dependencies.

So you have a couple options:

 1. Download and test .debs for intrepid, from:
     https://edge.launchpad.net/~intel-gfx-testing/+archive

 -or-

 2. Download and test the Jaunty alpha-2 (or newer) Live CD,
(which includes a beta of the new xserver 1.6 as well).
     See http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/9.04/ for ISOs

Thanks ahead of time! You can simply reply to this email to report your
findings.

P.S., if you wish to forward your bug upstream yourself, please follow
these directions to do so:

We're closing this bug since it is has been some time with no response from the original reporter. However, if the issue still exists please feel free to reopen with the requested information. Also, if you could, please test against the latest development version of Ubuntu, since this confirms the bug is one we may be able to pass upstream for help.
