Playing Any Sort of Video Locks Up Everything

Bug Description

I'm using Ubuntu 8.04, and recently it seems that any clip I download off the internet results in a total lock up of the computer. The only thing that responds is the mouse.

The player doesn't seem to matter either - I substituted the default player with VLC and it still totally locks up.

I'm forced to use ALT+Prt Sc + REISUB.

Any thoughts?

Disabling Compiz seems to fix this. So what's wrong with compiz here?

Thanks for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. Could you please add your ~/.xsession-errors, /var/log/Xorg.0.log and the output of lspci -vvnn to your bug report as separate attachments? Thanks in advance.

Since it's been a very long time since any additional info was added to this bug, I'm just checking to see if this is still an issue, and find out what additional work should be done on this bug.
