Bug Description

I am using Ubuntu 8.04 Hardy Heron. System Specs are:

Intel Core Duo 2080 1.73GHz
1 GB RAM DDR2
Intel GMA 950 Graphics card.

Problem: It seems that when i try playing video files (flv, mpg, mp4, mov) using vlc or any other video player, the system enters a lockup. The mouse can be moved and the sound is still playing but there is no video and system freezes. I cannot even kill the X server by the default (Ctrl+Alt+Bkspace) combo. The only way to fix such a crash is to reset or hold the power button. I have already done this 7-8 times and last time I was browsing the screensavers on the gnome-screensaver window. After clicking an opengl screensaver the same crash occurred.

A check in system log does not show any faults. It seems as if the system freezes before any log of this is made.

A same description of this problem is given here: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=279872

A long discussion of the bug is here: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=5038628#post5038628

The difference is that the release for that person is 6.06 Dapper Drake.

Have you tried disabling compiz?

Yeah, disabling compiz stops the problem. It only happens when compiz is on.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. You reported this bug a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering is this still an issue for you? Could you try to reproduce the same with Ubuntu 8.10 or 9.04? Thanks in advance.
