Bug Description

ive recently tried the weather applet, but the icon shows on the bar about half the size of the other icons, ive restarted awn and tried resizing the bar and the restarting, but the weather applet icon always stays smaller, also the curved look doesnt work.

running ubuntu hardy (8.04) fully updated
compiz fusion
nvidia graphics card (7600gs)
amd athalon 3200+ cpu (@2.2ghz)

i checked in synaptic and im using -

avant-window-navigator-bzr 0.3.1.bzr242.2~hardy
awn core applets-bzr 0.3.1.bzr485.1~hardy
awn manager-bzr 0.3.1bzr242.2~hardy

ive posted a screenshot, the bar is at 46 pixels (i normally have the bar at 36pixels) is it meant to be like this ?

Please right click on the weather icon, choose Preferences, and set "Show Temperature" to Lower Center.

I think you will find it looks correct with that modification.

Mosburger your opinion on whether this is a bug?

as requested i have re-positioned the temperature display (from top to bottom)
i have included 2 screen shots - screeny2 @ 46pixels and screeny3 @ 36pixels (icon offset on both is 20pixels)

i found that at 46 the icon looks quite blurry (this may be my eyes though :-)
i also found that if i keep the bar at 46 i will have to remove some launchers / applets because the bar is pretty much the entire width of my screen at this size, although i would prefer to have it at 36pixels.
cheers

Thanks for the additional screenshot.

IMO they are being displayed as they were intended.

Admittedly the weather applet icon tends to be sparser than some and even more so when placed beside a filled in icon such as the one to the left. Visual perception being what it is I would suggest moving the weather applet to a different location.

Yes you will see some "fuzziness" in icons when the original source is a png (as is the case here). This occurs when the icons need to be scaled to the appropriate size for the bar. If properly designed svg icons were used then chances are that the fuzziness would not occur to the same degree. However, if I remember correctly there was a great deal of difficulty finding a complete, acceptably licensed, set of icons for this applet... I suspect this was the best set out there.

My suggestion is to use the bar size that you are most comfortable with. But there is the unfortunate reality that the smaller the size the more difficult it will be to read text. Looking at the applet it appears to me that the text is approximately is between 1/3 and 1/4 of the total height. At a bar height of 36 pixels this is pushing the font size down.

My suggestion is to file a feature request to add configuration options for Font size and font colour and other aspects you think would be useful. They may not happen immediately but there's a good chance they will get done eventually.

While I am working on it, we could decide what to do here. The issue is that the condition icons (in the images folder of the applet) are not cropped at all. Take a peek and you will see exactly what I mean; there is plenty of padding on all sides. The best thing to do (if we are allowed, based on the image license) might be to crop them all to fit the actual contents.

And a font size option would be pretty straight forward.

I am assigning this to me. Does anyone have any opinions on whether or not to crop the icons? In some ways it is nice, as it allows room for the temperature overlay without being totally on top of the condition. On the other hand it can look odd, and it might look better with full-size condition icons. I can probably add an option to crop the images and handle it conditionally in the code.

I have no objections to allow greater flexibility.

That being said the current default appearance with the text in the bottom middle works perfectly here. I normally have the bar height in the low to mid 40s.
