I can comfirm this bug. When I switched from Ubuntu to Xubuntu, hwtest-gtk is removed and put in residual config in Synaptic. When you try to remove it completely you get these errors.

problem solved

I just deleted the hwtest.postrm file in the directory /var/lib/dpkg/info/
with the help of mc (midtnight-commander)

filepath : /var/lib/dpkg/info/hwtest.postrm

and installed the new version of hwtest-gtk 0.1-0ubuntu13
from the ppa.launchpad.net repository... i don't know which but here
is my sourceslist...

Confirmed in Ubuntu Intrepid.

I solved this by issuing "sudo touch /var/lib/dpkg/info/hwtest.postrm", then running the uninstall again. Worked just fine.
