In a system where the console is directed to a serial console I need to add:

console=ttyS0,9600 to the kernel boot options in menu.lst

This works, but when the kernel is upgraded it automatically changes all options
back to the defaults "console=tty0".

It would be a nice if the upgrade would take into account that there could be
local changes to menu.lst that should be preserved.

You need to add custom options to the line beginning with "# kopt=" (yes, it
looks like a comment) and run update-grub, as documented by the comments in
/boot/grub/menu.lst.
