Bug Description

Binary package hint: gnome-panel

When opening Gimp .xcf files from Places > Recent Documents, I get the following message:

Could not open recently used document "file:///media/disk/Johnny5/johnny5.xcf"
Could not find a suitable application.

But .xcf loads fine in Nautilus

update : The same happens for .chm files

Tested on Gutsy and Hardy.

Bug confirmed. I am also able to reproduce this error.

Steps to reproduce:
1. Open Gimp
2. Create a new file, then save it
3. Go to Places > My Recent Documents, and select the .xcf Gimp file
3. The error message above will appear.

I think this is a gnome bug and not a GIMP bug.
The reason I say this is because of the error message "Could not find a suitable application". So Gimp has not started at all yet, because gnome doesn't know what to do with the file.

Please correct me if my understanding is incorrect.

I noticed that the MimeType of xcf files is correctly detected by nautilus, however, file detects application/octet-stream (which is a synonym of unknown) instead of image/x-xcf. GNOME use MimeTypes to identify files and GIMP registers the image/x-xcf MimeType in his desktop file in /usr/share/applications.

I am experiencing a similar bug with chm files. They open correctly on double-click in the file browser. But fails with a similar message as reported above when opening from Recent Documents.

I also confirm jarav comment. Opening .chm files through recent documents fails while it opens correctly in chmsee through nautilus.

I get a similar issue with Inkscape files (on Hardy). Double-clicking in Nautilus runs Inkscape, but selecting the same file from "Places->Recent Documents" runs Eye of Gnome.
