corner of letter J gets stuck behind after moving window and changing position of J

Bug Description

Binary package hint: mozilla-thunderbird

When writing emails, if J is the first letter in the sentence, you will see an extra tip appear if you move the window, or resize.

When you then move the position of the J, for example entering a space before the J, the extra tip of the J gets left behind!

Moving the window or resizing or even print screen (so no screen shots for you) eliminates that tip.

Font use are the defaults.

Thunderbird version 2.0.0.14 (20080505) for ubuntu

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. You reported this bug a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue for you. Can you try with the latest Ubuntu release? I haven't been able to reproduce this in Thunderbird 2.0.0.19. Thanks in advance.

Are you using the default Ubuntu theme? If not, can you provide a link to the theme you're using, and try to reproduce this using the default theme (Human)?

I was using a customized theme mainly based off clearlooks, with mist colors. And yes, the bug is reproducible using default Human theme.

I just installed intrepid on a brand new laptop, with minimal programs loaded, and I still see the exact same bug in Thunderbird 2.0.0.19, so I'm pretty sure its not computer specific. This is the 3rd computer out of the 3 computers that I have ubuntu on. I'm surprised that no one else notices this too. I noticed this partially because my name starts with J.

Does changing the font help? Are you using the same profile (backed up and used in new install)? I'm not real sure why you are seeing this but I use it without an issue with 2.0.0.19 3.0b...
What is your screen res set at? Does changing it fix the issue? What graphic card and drivers are you using?

Yes changing the font helps. I see this only with the font "variable width" which is the same as "serif".

I do transfer my profiles, but the bug is seen BEFORE I transfer anything. I noticed this issue on 3 different computers.

1. IBM T40, 1400*1050, ati mobililty9000, xorg drivers
2. intel e2160 desktop, 1900*1200, nvidia gso9600, default drivers
3. HP G70, 1440*900, intel 4500m, default drivers

Don't think it has anything to do with the res or drivers. I've also tried enabling/disabling compiz. Same.

Does this occur after transferring your profiles as well, or only before? What's different from the default settings in your transferred profiles? Does this happen before and/or after transferring profile data if you compose messages in text mode? To change to composing messages in text mode, go to Edit -> Account Settings... and find your account in the list, on the left side of the window that appears. Under that, in the Composition & Addressing item, uncheck the "Compose messages in HTML format" box. Click OK, and then try to reproduce this bug. When you're done, just go back and re-check the box.

Also, please confirm that I'm trying to reproduce this correctly:
- I'm composing a message in HTML mode with my font set to Variable Width.
- I write any sentence that starts with a J as the very first letter.
- I put the cursor to the left of the J and insert a space or press Enter to insert a new line.

Is that correct?

Thanks in advance!

In text mode, this doesn't happen. Only happens in HTML mode with "variable width" or serif.

You've got it slightly wrong. This is how you reproduce it.

- compose msg in HTML with font set to "variable width", and it should be the same font as "serif".
- begin any line by typing J (can be capital or small letters...both have the problem))
- click on the MOVE bar (you don't even have to move it), or RESIZE works too
- at this stage, the extra tip on J will appear!
- now, you can put a space or enter right before the J
- the tip that appeared is stuck there!

Thanks for trying to reproduce.

You only see this in Thunderbird?
I'm leaning towards a font issue more than Thunderbird, since it only
happens with 1 font or setting simular to the font.

Yes I only see this in Thunderbird. While it is definitely font related, it is also how the font interacts with the compose window of Thunderbird.

I didn't see this font "serif" in openoffice.

We're wondering if this is still an issue for you. Could you please try with the latest version of Thunderbird? If this is still an issue, could you please try again with Thunderbird 3 from the Ubuntu Mozilla Daily PPA? Adding this repository is described here: https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-mozilla-daily/+archive/ppa

Thanks in advance.
