Bug Description

Ubuntu 8.04, kernel 2.6.24-17-generic.

When I open the lid after suspend, I see a blank screen which doesn't respond on key press. I have to press Ctrl+F7 to switch back to graphical display and see a password prompt.

Nothing interesting in dmesg.

Reproduces 100%. Can provide any information you need.

This happens on my HP Pavillion dv6000 with Intrepid too, although I cannot recover.
The screen is *completely* blank (i.e. never turns on), and nothing I do changes it. CTRL + ALT + F7 does not do anything, nor does blindly entering my password.

The Ubuntu Kernel Team is planning to move to the 2.6.27 kernel for the upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release. As a result, the kernel team would appreciate it if you could please test this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. There are one of two ways you should be able to test:

1) If you are comfortable installing packages on your own, the linux-image-2.6.27-* package is currently available for you to install and test.

--or--

2) The upcoming Alpha5 for Intrepid Ibex 8.10 will contain this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. Alpha5 is set to be released Thursday Sept 4. Please watch http://www.ubuntu.com/testing for Alpha5 to be announced. You should then be able to test via a LiveCD.

Please let us know immediately if this newer 2.6.27 kernel resolves the bug reported here or if the issue remains. More importantly, please open a new bug report for each new bug/regression introduced by the 2.6.27 kernel and tag the bug report with 'linux-2.6.27'. Also, please specifically note if the issue does or does not appear in the 2.6.26 kernel. Thanks again, we really appreicate your help and feedback.

I am still on Hardy but it seems after last week's update my dv6000 resumes properly. E.g. Screen comes back soon, no more alt+f7 trick.

The Intrepid Ibex 8.10 Beta release was most recently announced - http://www.ubuntu.com/testing/intrepid/beta . It contains the 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. It would be great if you could test and verify if this is still an issue. The status is being set to fixed released until we receive further feedback. Thanks.

As I said above, it is still an issue. The screen doesn't show anything, e.g. no backlight, no keyboard responding in any way.

Hi Tobias,

It might be best if you open a new bug. It seems you have different hardware than the original bug reporter. Even though you may be experiencing the same issue it really is hardware specific. Thanks.

i have a new HP Pavilion dv6 (as of December 2010) and this problem (or something very nearly the same) is affecting my laptop as well. When I close the lid and leave it shut for very long the display is lost and nothing gets it back. I have to turn off the laptop. In power management it does not seem to matter if it is on suspend, hibernate, or just blank screen. In all cases if the lid is closed for too long the display is permanently lost and I must turn off the laptop. Since the original but was posted in 2008 and it is now nearly 2011 I hope this will given the highest priority.
