Bug Description

When I disable the touchpad by his botton and then re-enable it, vertical-scrolling stops working until i restart gnome or the whole system.
Moreover, even if i've disabled "mouse clicks by touchpad" from "Mouse Preferences" menu, the touchpad seems ignore this setting.

I'm sorry for my bad english.

Thanks for your help.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. Please attach your X server configuration file (/etc/X11/xorg.conf) and X server log file (/var/log/Xorg.0.log) to the bug report as individual uncompressed file attachments using the "Attachment:" box below. Could you please also try to run without any /etc/X11/xorg.conf and let Xorg autodetect your display and video card and touchpad? Please also attach the /var/log/Xorg.0.log from this attempt.

After attaching the information requested above, set the bug status to 'new' to signify that it is ready for triage / review. Thanks in advance.

I can confirm this issue myself, and am including an Xorg.0.log and my xorg.conf. This doesn't seem to only be related to turning off the keys -- I tend to leave my laptop on for 5-7 days before a reboot, and typically after day 2-4 I will lose the scroll. I have figured out purely by accident that I can regain it, by dropping to TTY(1-6) then swapping back to the X session. The scroll line instantly becomes available again. The issue doesn't seem to have a specific trigger that I can spot that causes the loss of the scroll ability, as it occurs during an assortment of use situations (heavy use during browsing, or periodic and not making contact for some time while in a terminal). I will generate a bare Xorg.0.log as well.

Xorg.0.log.old which contained several of the events as described above (including my above described workaround.)

Bare, no xorg.conf. Addendum to above: I know that the events happened during the course of the above log, but I am unsure if they are documented in the above log.

Please try in Ubuntu 8.10; input-hotplug has probably fixed this.

Is that even a legitimate solution to the problem though? 8.04 is supposed to be the long-term support release. If the package is fixed in 8.10, why has the package not been backported to incorporate the fixes for 8.04?

We can do no more; input-hotplug is an enormous change and requires a new X server and lots of other bits and pieces.
