Bug Description

Binary package hint: linux-source-2.6.24

This problem happens about 50 percent of the time on my Toshiba Satellite A45. This problem started after I upgraded to Ubuntu 8.04 Hardy. I never saw this problem with Gutsy.

When pressing the Shut Down button to power off the computer, normally, the screen will go blank for a short time (few seconds), then I will get the Ubuntu progress bar screen that shows progress made until shut down. When the bug happens, I will get to the blank screen, but then never to the progress screen. Eventually, I have to use the power button to shut the computer completely off. If I get to the progress bar screen, I know shut down will happen properly.

uname -a
Linux StHelens 2.6.24-16-generic #1 SMP Thu Apr 10 13:23:42 UTC 2008 i686 GNU/Linux

cat /proc/version_signature
Ubuntu 2.6.24-16.30-generic

Note: This happens with the same frequency when doing a reset instead of a shut down.

I've gotten this on my Dell 500m since my first upgrade as well, did a fresh install and problem persists.

I should also mention the following:

The keyboard is inoperative and if you don't notice that the shutdown failed then you will find that the system temperature rises frighteningly high.

Often when the shutdown works, the progress bar on the usplash starts very near the end.

Not that anybody is paying any attention to this post but...

The post http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=767833&highlight=hardy+shutdown, suggests that the issue may be with the Intel 855 graphics device.

The Ubuntu Kernel Team is planning to move to the 2.6.27 kernel for the upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release. As a result, the kernel team would appreciate it if you could please test this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. There are one of two ways you should be able to test:

1) If you are comfortable installing packages on your own, the linux-image-2.6.27-* package is currently available for you to install and test.

--or--

2) The upcoming Alpha5 for Intrepid Ibex 8.10 will contain this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. Alpha5 is set to be released Thursday Sept 4. Please watch http://www.ubuntu.com/testing for Alpha5 to be announced. You should then be able to test via a LiveCD.

Please let us know immediately if this newer 2.6.27 kernel resolves the bug reported here or if the issue remains. More importantly, please open a new bug report for each new bug/regression introduced by the 2.6.27 kernel and tag the bug report with 'linux-2.6.27'. Also, please specifically note if the issue does or does not appear in the 2.6.26 kernel. Thanks again, we really appreicate your help and feedback.

I have exactly the same problem (Acer TravelMate 662, Intel 855GM chipset).

The progress bar screen on shutdown does not appear and shutdown fails. On my laptop the HDD LED stays on forever. On startup orphaned inodes (ext3) have to be cleaned up, so umount on shutdown seems to fail and the HDD gets (slightly) corrupted.

Hi Peter,

Can you specify if you are seeing this with Hardy (2.6.24 kernel) installed or with the latest 2.6.27 kernel from Intrepid? Thanks.

I was referring to Hardy.

This bug prevents me from installing Intrepid:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ubiquity/+bug/267199

Booting the LiveCD on my computer is quite slow and since the HDD is not even involved I am not sure if such a test would show this issue.

However I'll try and keep you informed.

Ubuntu 8.10 Alpha 5 i386 (2.6.27-2):

10 boot/shutdown cycles (using the LiveCD) have led to 2 hangs on shutdown. The screen just turns black and the machine stops responding.

No HDD partition was mounted and no network interface was up prior to shutdown.

Hi mark-v-alexander,

Please be sure to confirm this issue exists with the latest development release of Ubuntu. ISO CD images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/ . Please then run following command from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal). It will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report.

apport-collect -p linux-image-`uname -r` 231533

Also, if you could test the latest upstream kernel available that would be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text. Please let us know your results.

Thanks in advance.
