Bug Description

Version information:
jmsmila@jmsmila-desktop:~$ lsb_release -rd
Description: Ubuntu 8.04
Release: 8.04

Problem statement:
I looked for the latest version of nagios in the repository and was unsuccessful.

The Nagios homepage, http://www.nagios.org, reports that version 3.0 was released on March 13th, 2008. Version 3.0.1 was released on April 1st.

Searching the Debian unstable repository with this URL:

http://packages.debian.org/search?keywords=nagios&searchon=names&suite=unstable&section=all

shows 4 discrete packages available; nagios3, nagios3-common, nagios3-dbg, and nagios3-doc.

Proposed resolution:
These Debian packages seem to be simply updated versions of the packages for nagios2, so I'm assuming the work necessary to create Ubuntu specific nagios3 packages would be minimal.

I copied the Debian source and Ubuntu nagios2 changes, and made a ppa package that built correctly and functions on my system.

It can be downloaded from the following apt source:
deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/rogerw/ubuntu hardy main
deb-src http://ppa.launchpad.net/rogerw/ubuntu hardy main

I most likely didn't correctly setup something, so please provide any feedback. I have packaged a few files for debian in the past, but there seem to be different ways of handling uploads... I will submit this to the MOTU tomorrow when my account is active.

Thanks,
Roger

I would love to give you feedback, however I'll be the first to admit that I'm a bit.. shall we say.. process challenged. :)

By that, I mean two things: First, I have little experience with Nagios. I tried it a few years ago and was unimpressed. Reading the changelog for version 3 convinced me it might be worth trying again. However, beyond installing it and verifying that it starts, I wouldn't know what else you might like me to try. If you have specific tests in mind, please let me know.

The other issue that I have is how do I use the link that you provide? Do I simply manually add it to the repository list somehow? As an aside, I generally use adept_manager for package maintenance. I am familiar with Synaptic, too, as well as directly editing text files through CLI. I would greatly appreciate some directions as to how you'd like me to proceed with installation.

BTW, thanks for the quick response! I've got two other reported bugs in Launchpad that have languished for months. I was worried that I wouldn't hear anything back on this one for quite some time.

Ignore my second issue. I clearly had a brain fart while reading your instructions. I'll check it out as soon as I can.

However, if there's anything in particular that you'd like me to try once I complete the install process, please don't hesitate to let me know.

TIA

OK, I ran the install for nagios3 using adept_manager. It looks like it installed everything installed correctly:

jim@tesla:/etc/init.d$ ps -ef | grep nagios
nagios 8396 1 0 15:19 ? 00:00:00 /usr/sbin/nagios3 -d /etc/nagios3/nagios.cfg
jim 8576 6721 0 15:30 pts/2 00:00:00 grep nagios
jim@tesla:/etc/init.d$

However, there seems to be a gotcha. I can't see it when I attempt to load http://localhost/nagios/:

"Failed to Connect

Firefox can't establish a connection to the server at localhost.

Though the site seems valid, the browser was unable to establish a connection.

    * Could the site be temporarily unavailable? Try again later.
    * Are you unable to browse other sites? Check the computer's network connection.
    * Is your computer or network protected by a firewall or proxy? Incorrect settings can interfere with Web browsing."

It looks as if it can't find a webserver? Not too surprising if that's the case, because I don't have a webserver loaded on this desktop PC. :) Missing dependency check?

Can you please attach between the version in intrepid and your version to the bug report?

I'm sorry, I'm not sure what you're asking for. Could you clarify?

Thanks,

That is indeed unclear. :-)

I meant: Can you please attach the diff between the version that is in intrepid right now and your proposed upload (that's in PPA)?

Then I should not have responded as I'm just an end user with an interest in trying out the app. I have been waiting to see if Roger Ward would be able to modify his install script so that would properly identify the dependency and automatically add a webserver as part of an install attempt.

Sorry about the confusion. :)

Any plans for backporting to Hardy? This is a server-tool and a lts-version looks like a nice basesystem.

I did as Emilio Monfort suggested and opened a bug under hardy backports.

Maybe that will get the package included, as they now have an intrepid version.

Fix released is totally appropriate as nagios3 is now in the archive.
As I said, backport requests are processed in a different tracker.
