Bug Description

I am running a Hardy system that has been incrementally upgraded from earlier releases
via the update manager, through Hardy alphas.

The system is an ASUS two-core Opteron, w/ NVIDIA chipset.

The gnome panel selection of System/Preferences/Sound appears to
hang for about 10 seconds, but a look at dmesg reveals that
gnome-sound-pro has segfaulted. This is recent behavior - it worked
fine until a few weeks ago.

The system is up-to-date as of 2008-05-15.

lsb_release -rd
Description: Ubuntu 8.04
Release: 8.04
rbe@rattler:~$ uname -a
Linux rattler 2.6.24-16-generic #1 SMP Thu Apr 10 12:47:45 UTC 2008 x86_64 GNU/Linux

lspci -vvnn and dmesg are attached.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. However, your crash report is either missing or challenging to deal with. Please follow these instructions to have apport report a new bug about your crash that can be dealt with by the automatic retracer.

If you are running the Ubuntu Stable Release you might need to enable apport in /etc/default/apport and restart.

If you are using Ubuntu with the Gnome desktop environment - launch nautilus and navigate to your /var/crash directory and double click on the crash report you wish to submit.
If you are using Kubuntu or Xubuntu you can file the crash using /usr/share/apport/apport-qt --crash-file=/var/crash/_my_crash_report.crash in a terminal - where _my_crash_report.crash is the crash you would like to report.

I'm closing this bug report since the process outlined above will automatically open a new bug report which can then dealt with more efficiently. Thanks in advance for your cooperation and understanding. If you have any issues obtaining a crash report, please set the bug status back to 'New' by clicking on the current status in the yellow bar above, and seclectin 'New' from the drop-down box that appears.

Thanks

1. I am not sure how to tell if I am running the" Ubuntu Stable Release" or not.
I am a bit behind on updates: Update manager claims I can add 104 updates.
I am reluctant to do so, because the last several times I've done it, my Nvidia
X11 went to bit heaven, and it took a few days of screwing around to get
the dual-monitor support working properly again.

2. I enabled /etc/default/apport, but did NOT yet restart the box. I'll do that
in a second. However, at this point, if I do System/Preferences/Sound,
I get this in dmesg:

[ 847.159824] gnome-sound-pro[7274]: segfault at 48e2b9e0 rip 7f66497456a8 rsp 7fff548c8d30 error 4

3. There is no files in /var/crash. I'm going to reboot this box and try it again.

After reboot, we have a lovely entry in /var/crash, which I'll send along shortly. The bug reporter thingy complained about a number of out-of-date packages,
but I can't take the time to deal with broken video stuff again, so will
defer updating for the nonce.

I'll file the bug report anyway, but do understand that people may be
reluctant to chase a bug which may have already been repaired by
software I have not updated.

The bug reporter refuses to send along the dump until I update x11-common,
but as noted earlier, I am deathly afraid to do that at present, as I can't
be off the air for even more days...

I updated all the other libraries that the bug reporter complained about,
then rebooted, but I get the same segfault.

I'll eventually upgrade the rest of the bits, and when I get the system
uncrippled again, I'll have another go at this.

Did I tell you that I'll NEVER buy another Nvidia product?
