Bug Description

1. Ran Update Manager... it suggested update to Heron
2. All ran okay to point where it arrived at samba where it listed some choices...
3. I chose to open shell and have a look... it opened in the terminal
4. I thought better of it and EXITed
5. Not a good scheme it seems ... several error messages but thought I'd better let the thing continue... which it did.
6. After restarting.... Package Problem alert "Sorry, the package "xserver-xorg" failed to install or upgrade"
7. That's all there is to it... from memory.

Could you post the content of the log files from the upgrade ? You can find them in /var/log/dist-upgrade/.

Thanks for you log files. There are some error messages, but openssh-server was successfully upgraded. I've seen similar bug reports with the samba package, which is also interacting with the end user on upgrades.

Setting to incomplete - needs a test case to reproduce it.

Thanks guys - as you say the upgrade appears to have worked and the response from the 'team' unbelievable . I suppose there are several things I take from this experience;
1. If the process of updating is still running even with 'error messages' - let it.
2. Even while updating I had access to Firefox to 'search' for 'now what...?'
3. If only the process of installing WinXP SP3 were 1% as pleasant/reliable as this... (sorry...)
