Segmentation fault when translating a single word from en to fr using Babel Fish

Bug Description

Binary package hint: gnome-translate

System : Ubuntu 8.04, French locale.

How to reproduce :
1) launch gnome-translate
2) click edit->preferences (édition-> préférences in French)
3) ensure "Babel Fish" is checked and is the first item of service list
4) click close button ("fermer" in French)
5) select English as source language and French as destination language
6) enter a single english word like "blather" as text to be translated
7) hit ctrl+T or click "translate" button ("traduire" in French)
gnome-translate will crash with the following message :

(gnome-translate:6415): GLib-CRITICAL **: g_convert: assertion `str != NULL' failed

Unable to test gnome-translation in Precise 11.10 as bug #892728 needs to be fixed first.
