Synaptic package manager stops working at 100% presumeably something to do with ldconfig

Bug Description

Binary package hint: synaptic

In KDE4, it stops at the end of the install saying this:

"ldconfig deferred processing now taking place"

Then it just sits there making no more progress.

This is critical because you cannot update anything again unless you restart the display manager.

I have the same Problem. I usually wait some time and then kill synaptic. This seems to cause no obvious problems, but it is most probably not the way it is supposed to be.

I am also experiencing this on Kubuntu 8.04 (ubuntu 8.04 upgraded/switched over to kubuntu) and KDE 4.1.

I have the same problem also on a fresh install of Kubuntu 8.04/KDE 4

In order to see if it was something to do with my installation, I tried using Adept Package Manager to install software (I do prefer Synaptic though, perhaps because I have become accustomed to it).

Adept does NOT have the same problem.

I think it is urgent to get this problem fixed because if all users are experiencing this, then it would be a very baffling problem for a new Linux user and could turn him/her off Linux.

Same here.
First accident was when I just upgraded to kde 4.1.1 2 days ago.

Until this moment Synaptic worked flawless.

Had this also today, after installing KDE 4.1.1 onto Ubuntu 8.04.1, merely to see what all the fuss was about.

Running Synaptic from the Kicker results in this issue. Have to xkill the window.

Running from terminal " sudo synaptic " - it works.

Maybe this problem is with kdesudo? Because changing settings in "Date&Time" and "Login Manager" freeze systemsettings
