Bug Description

Binary package hint: network-manager

Hey,

I am running ubuntu 8.04 on an hp G5000 laptop with broadcom BCM94311MCG wlan mini pc wireless chipset. For the past couple of months I have been using the ndiswrapper method under gutsy and have had no problems witht wireless. Upon upgrading to 8.04 my wireless stopped working. Having fixed several issues to do with the order modules were loading in I am able to scan for wireless networks but unable to connect to them. Symptoms are similar to bug https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/network-manager/+bug/23377
after selecting my network and entering the key the network manager tray icon animates and displays a tooltip saying "waiting for network key for wireless network BLAH". Another thing which may be related is that I am unable to set the ESSID of the network using iwconfig. After typing "sudo iwconfig eth1 essid "myESSID in quotes"" there are no complaints on the command line but the essid is still set to off/any.
I am using WPA encryption and I have checked the password many times.

Thanks in advance
Alex

I think this might be the problem.

It seems to be that nm-applet is having problems obtaining the network key from the gnome keyring. When I first attempted to use wireless the tray icon would animate and flash green and ask for the wireless key every minute or so. Then I opened the manual setup for wireless networks and was prompted by the keyring to allow network manager to access wireless keys. Since then the nm-applet has hung on 'waiting for network key'. I know nothing about gnome keyring at the moment but will look into it and see what i can figure out.

(cross-posting from http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=837959 ; i'm running a Dell Inspiron 1525 w/ Ubuntu 7.10):

fwiw, i was struggling with the "waiting for network key" issue for one wireless network i use, and the solution was to simply change to a different "wireless security" setting in the wireless network dialog. the one that worked in my specific case was "WEP 64/128-bit ASCII".

I think I've having the same problem. I'm using a Thinkpad T42p with Atheros AR5212 wireless card. All the access points within range show up on the menu, but when I select the access point to connect, it hangs on "waiting for wireless key".

when I type iwconfig in the terminal repeatedly, my ath0 seems to be swapping between 5Ghz and 2.4Ghz frequencies, and looping through 802.11a to 802.11g and back again.

This only happened when I upgraded from Gutsy to Hardy.

I'm using WPA2 on my access point.
