Bug Description

Binary package hint: totem

I am able to search for videos in totem and see the related videos, but I cannot play any of them. When I attempt to play a video, nothing happens and the command line spits out:
** (totem:10580): DEBUG: Init of Python module
** (totem:10580): DEBUG: Registering Python plugin instance: YouTube+TotemPythonPlugin
** (totem:10580): DEBUG: Creating object of type YouTube+TotemPythonPlugin
** (totem:10580): DEBUG: Creating Python plugin instance
Could not resolve stream MRL for YouTube video "0MUOn_nJmRA".
Could not resolve stream MRL for YouTube video "olWjnfBoY8E".

I suspect that the video playback does not honor the proxy settings. I have all access to the internet blocked except through a proxy/filter. This occurs with all videos and I can view the same videos in FX3.

I am running Hardy Heron amd64 with the most recent patches applied.

Thanks for your report, can you hear internet radio for example in rhythmbox? that's maybe a miss configuration on your side.

I can listen to internet radio through rhythmbox. I can also listen to internet radio through totem. I just cannot get a youtube video to play in totem. The proxy problem is just a guess.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. You reported this bug a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering is this still an issue for you? Thanks in advance.

Right now totem will appear to do nothing at 100% cpu when I attempt a search. I never get results.

Why you're confirming a bug report with an explanation of something that's not the same you filled on the first place? Is ok if you cannot confirm this because you're facing some other problem , leaving it as incomplete.

Ok, I am changing the bug. I am guessing my previous condition still exists, but totem can't get to the point that I can see it. Anyway, changing bug...

I can still see the original problem. Totem's YouTube plugin can get through the proxy when searching, but if I try to watch a video from the list displayed it tries to connect to the internet directly regardless of my proxy settings.

I can see this in netstat:

Proto Recv-Q Send-Q Local Address Foreign Address State
tcp 0 1 192.168.91.128:44399 208.65.153.238:80 SYN_SENT

This can never get through, and after a while I get:

Could not resolve stream MRL for YouTube video "tBNLTKQdNeE".

Seems like the plugin ignores the proxy settings when trying to play.

Hi,
I suspect that this has to do with the fact that if you launch totem from the system menu, then it will not honour the proxy settings. When we open a terminal first and launch totem from that then YouTube plugin works.
This is also happening with googleearth

A work around that I did is to edit the launcher. I use
env http_proxy=http://proxyhost:port/ totem %U
in exec part of totem.desktop
