Bug Description

Binary package hint: rhythmbox

I noticed that the Rhythmbox lyrics window doesn't allow middle-click copy & paste. C&P via Ctrl-C and Ctrl-V works fine though.

Steps to reproduce:
1. Right-click on any song and select "Properties"
2. In the opening window, go to the lyrics tab
3. Click "edit" to enter the editing mode, select some text in the lyrics field, and paste it into the lyrics field with your middle mouse button.

What I expect to happen:
The text which I selected should appear where I clicked since it is conventional in other applications as well and the "editing mode" is selected.

What actually happens:
The text doesn't appear in the lyrics window. When I middle click in other apps (for example gedit), pasting works though.
Pasting text copied from the other app into the lyrics field works too (sometimes, note below).

While I'm writing this and still playing around with the pasting, I noticed that SOMETIMES the pasting into the lyrics field doesn't work if I take text from the other app, but I couldn't reproduce when it exactly doesn't work.

Thanks for your report, that works fine for me I'm able to copy the lyrics from there, can you test with another user? are you running compiz ? does it happens without it?

Okay, I tested with another (just recently created) test user. It behaves exactly the same.
So did Compiz. But I tested Compiz two hours ago, so I'm not sure anymore and I'm going to double check it to be sure.

But I think I am able to reproduce, when the pasting to other apps works and when not.
If you select the text in gedit and THEN activate the "Edit mode", the pasting DOESN'T WORK.
If you select the text in gedit in when the lyrics window is in "edit mode", pasting WORKS.
If you select the text in the lyrics window, pasting into gedit WORKS, no matter whether in "edit mode" or not.

I'm still investigating if there are certain circumstances under which copying and pasting works in the lyrics window.
I'll test this and check Compiz and will report that.

I logged into the test user account mentioned above, pressed Alt-F2, so that I could type a command and I typed "metacity --replace" to disable Compiz. If it wasn't right, tell me.

Now pasting works even in the case mentioned above, where selecting text in gedit with "normal mode" and then switching the lyrics window to "edit mode" didn't work.

I also discovered on the test user account that when you restart compiz using the "compiz" command, pasting between apps and lyrics window still works. If I log off with the test user and log on again, everything is back to normal with the test results mentioned above.

And I don't know if it matters, but when clicking the "Save" button, for the fraction of a second there appears the text "Nach Liedtexten suchen..." (German for "Searching for lyrics") and then the old text is there.

Yes, I do, but I'm now doubting that the trouble is a problem just of Rhythmbox (or none at all, it depends on how you take it) and I know now why you had problems to reproduce my problem.

Actually, the "Edit mode" and "Standard mode" switching has nothing to do with it. When I select the text, I sometimes hit Backspace or Del to simulate the "Cut" command. I expected the text to be copied to a certain buffer where it would be stored. I'm used to it, because I worked a longer time with KDE and its Klipper app. But now I see that only when the text stays there selected and untouched, the text will be pasted with the middle click.

So, if you want to put the report to invalid, please tell me if the text yanking feature could be improved that it works similar to Ctrl-C or Ctrl-X and whether I should open a feature request then.

Sorry for the trouble I caused when I thought that it was just a Rhythmbox issue. :)
