Hardy - No preview icon when file extention is .mpeg

Bug Description

Files with an extension of .mpg seem to generate a "preview icon" showing content from aprox 1/3 into the video stream.

Files with an extension of .mpeg do not do this, instead they have their default Gnome icon.

Changing the file name through the GUI to .mpg causes it to generate a preview icon, and once generated it can be renamed back to .mpeg successfully and the preview icon remains.

thank you for your bug report, not confirming that works correctly on my hardy installation, could you attach a video example to the bug?

This mpeg file may be downloaded from:
http://www.tourism.tallinn.ee/static/files/080/tallinn.mpeg

On the original machine I was using when I first discovered the problem, now every time I wget that file from the web server, it gets the correct preview type icon.

On this second test machine, I can not get it to generate a preview type icon... by changing the filename.

At first the codec's were not installed, so I fetched all three that it says might be appropriate for the file, still no preview icon, so deletes the file.

Then I rebooted the system, wget downloaded a fresh copy to the Desktop, still no preview icon.

Anyway, there seems to be some trouble.

 Hi' Pedro.
It's not about size, the same files in gutsy gave preview icons on every item.

Do you need any info about files, sizes or anything else ?

We were wondering if this is still an issue for you. Can you try with the latest Ubuntu release? Thanks in advance.

Testing with 8.04 which the bug was opened against, or 8.10 - the latest release?

Do I need to reload a test box, or is downloading the latest updates good enough?

Thank you for your fast reply. Since the bug was still open I guessed that this is not fixed in Ubuntu 8.04 (Hardy). If it is please tell us. If not it would be great if you could test it with Ubuntu 8.10 (Intrepid). If you don't want to upgrade your existing system because of stability and you are not ale to set up a dual boot, you could test it with a virtual system in VirtualBox or someone else, who has/had the issue, tries it.

8.04 with all patches still has the issue. I have not reloaded an 8.04 system lately - applying all available updates right away verses one that has been in use and gradually gotten updates as available.

I am thinking to do some testing with 8.10, so I will put that on my list of things to test.

For production, unfortunately I need Parallels. They do not even have "official" support for 8.04 yet, and no test builds for 8.10.

So, do you need me to test something further on 8.04, such as setting up a clean box and apply all updates before recreating the issue?

Hi I'm runnig 8.10, the preview icons work just fine. but I guess the bug can not be closed on 8.04 yet.

Thank you, Stinger. So I am closing this bug due to your comment regarding this being fixed in Intrepid. If you need a fix for the bug in previous versions of Ubuntu, please follow the instructions for "How to request new packages" at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UbuntuBackports#request-new-packages.
