/boot/config-{uname -r} does not contain correct kernel configuration

Bug Description

I tried to compile a modified kernel. Unfortunately the configuration files located at /boot don't fit the kernel(s). I compiled a kernel without changing any option using /boot/config-2.6.24-16-generic. After installing the new kernel package and rebooting with that kernel, half of the hardware didn't work anymore. Unless I'm very much mistaken there should be no difference between the new kernel and the original one.

Furthermore, one can't access /proc/config.gz because this option ist not activated in the default kernel image.

Ubuntu-Hardy amd64

I can confirm that!
Tried the very same some days ago, just wanted to patch the kernel/build the module to support EDAC (Error Detection And Correction) with my Athlon64-X2 and 6GB of ECC-RAM. After kernel and modules were built, all sound related stuff and some more things were missing.

So, the supplied /boot/config-{uname -r} definitely does not match the kernel it should belong to.
(under Feisty there were only minor things missing and I had to activate one or two features, but with Hardy it's a desaster)

Is there ANYBODY out there that feels himself responsible for kernel stuff? It's not such a big thing to share the needed kernel config, is it? A hint where one can find the CORRECT config would be very helpful as well.

Or maybe someone would like to share his knowledge and reveal the secret why there's no useful config file.

Hi,

i can confirm this bug. I have compiled a new kernel with the actual config-file 2.6.24-16 under /boot and after that the sound was not working at all. After a new compilation the sound is working again.

An easy solution would be to enable the corresponding feature in the kernel, so one can read the configuration of the running kernel from /proc/config.gz.

This feature is disabled in the standard Ubuntu kernels, so we face a hen/egg problem.

The Ubuntu Kernel Team is planning to move to the 2.6.27 kernel for the upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release. As a result, the kernel team would appreciate it if you could please test this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. There are one of two ways you should be able to test:

1) If you are comfortable installing packages on your own, the linux-image-2.6.27-* package is currently available for you to install and test.

--or--

2) The upcoming Alpha5 for Intrepid Ibex 8.10 will contain this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. Alpha5 is set to be released Thursday Sept 4. Please watch http://www.ubuntu.com/testing for Alpha5 to be announced. You should then be able to test via a LiveCD.

Please let us know immediately if this newer 2.6.27 kernel resolves the bug reported here or if the issue remains. More importantly, please open a new bug report for each new bug/regression introduced by the 2.6.27 kernel and tag the bug report with 'linux-2.6.27'. Also, please specifically note if the issue does or does not appear in the 2.6.26 kernel. Thanks again, we really appreicate your help and feedback.

The Intrepid Ibex 8.10 Beta release was most recently announced - http://www.ubuntu.com/testing/intrepid/beta . It contains the 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. It would be great if you could test and verify if this is still an issue. The status is being set to Incomplete until we receive further feedback. Thanks.

I am still with Hardy and have no intention to use Intrepid. Hardy will survive Intrepid by more than a year with regard to updates.

So, I am awaiting to get it fixed in Hardy's kernel 2.6.24-21 - keep in mind, it is a LTS version!

Hi, you reported this bug a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering is this still an issue for you? Thank you in advance.

It is still present in Hardy! (kernel 2.6.24-24)

Please consider, Hardy is LTS and with regard to maintainence will survive even Jaunty.
