Bug Description

I have noticed the following behavior many a times for all open office applications (like writer, spread sheet)
- Some times the office applications start intermittently freezing and won't behave properly unless I reboot the laptop
- While doing most of the operations like mouse wheel scrolling, selecting something from menus the open office window freezes for 5-6 seconds and then unfreezes and proceeds with the operation (e.g. clicking on file menu freezes the window and after 5-6 second the menu drop down is shown. If I again try to proceed again the window freezes. Certain operations like scrolling of pages by clicking the arrow keys at the top and bottom of the right hand side scroll bar and clicks on the body of the scroll bar works seamlessly (however dragging of the scroll bar freezes the window)
- This way working in open office becomes quite impossible unless I reboot my laptop.

I tried to debug this behavior by installing the debug symbols but got the following error during the installation,
openoffice.org-writer-dbgsym:
Depends: openoffice.org-writer (=1:2.3.0-1ubuntu5.3) but 1:2.4.0-3ubuntu6 is to be installed

So presently can't debug.

I am running Hardy Heron on my HP laptop.

Further update. Now after closing the documents and opening after some time I am experiencing that the issue has vanished for now. So every time a reboot might not be necessarily required. However, I distinctly remember that merely closing and reopening the documents hadn't worked earlier.

What other applications are running when you experience this issue?

Please attach the /var/log/syslog file and the output of dmesg for the time when you are experiencing this issue.
To attach the output of dmesg, run the command "dmesg > dmesg.log" in the terminal and attach the file "dmesg.log"

Thanks!

Sure. I will update this bug with the necessary info once I see this behavior again.

Now my writer seems to be frozen indefinitely while creating a hyperlink targeted to a location inside the same document (it might be altogether a different bug). I am attaching the necessary files.

I was running Evolution (with one mail message opened), Gnome termial (with screen utility), Galeon web browser, Gedit when this happened. In the notification area the Pidgin was also running. None of the other applications behavior changed.

Let me know if any other information is needed.

The writer started working normally after around 5 minutes of freeze time (after I finished adding the above comments). I had also opened the help related to hyper links and it was also frozen during that time. However the behavior of writer hanging after nearly every action for 5 seconds or so hasn't been observed till now.

Sometimes there's a freeze, only exit is kill swriter process. On the "successful" exits the KDE crash handler pops up but there is no useful data. Running Hardy, HP AMD64 laptop. Cheers!

Do you still have this problem with the current openoffice.org 1:2.4.1-1ubuntu2 version in hardy?

I had encountered this issue once around a month ago. However, I was too busy to note down the version/logs etc. I will surely post the details if I encounter it again.

Thanks,
Amit

Yes, I am seeing the freezing issue on openoffice.org 1:2.4.1-1ubuntu2. I saw it while opening a copy of a shared workbook.

Some more details. The freeze only happens when I try to scroll (either using the mouse wheel or using the scrollbar). Otherwise the freeze doesn't occur.

I have identical problems with oocalc,
even with simple documents it freezes for 5.. 10 SECONDS!!! (on amd64 dual core 6 GB ram, no other load)

It seems to happen especially where I enter long text into some cells, of which some are with word-wrapping.

Drawing of oocalc window (by switching from and back to it, or by dragging some other window in front of oocalc) freezes my X for 5-10 seconds. X server usage spikes to user entire 50% cpu (1 of 2 cores).

Nvidia, binary drivers. Amd64 Ubuntu 9.04

This bug report was filed against an old version of Ubuntu.
Can you confirm whether this is still an issue in natty?

If you don't mind, it would be very helpful if you could update the bug
report in launchpad to 'Fix Released' if it is no longer an issue for
you, or if it is still occurring under natty, please tag the bug 'natty'
so it's easier for us to track.

We're closing this bug since it is has been some time with no response from the original reporter. However, if the issue still exists please feel free to reopen with the requested information. Also, if you could, please test against the latest development version of Ubuntu, since this confirms the bug is one we may be able to pass upstream for help.
