no tty0, 1, 2 .. terminal

I'm using ubuntu 8.04 and I have no access to other terminal by pressing Ctrl+Alt+F1 to F8 ... I only can see the F7 (X) console. It happens when normaly using Gnome and when the system shut down the laptop LCD it can't get back, just if I switch between some console and then back to F7 console. It just dindn't happen in previous versions.
