Bug Description

Binary package hint: totem

I have tried with several mp3's but the seek bar is grey and is not selectable. Totom worked fine for me in 7.10 and then I did a dist upgrade to 8.04 and no seek in mp3's since. Not sure if it is related but I can not seek in Rhythmbox either.

AVI's with mp3 audio seeking works.

I am running Totem-Gstreamer.

Sorry a bit vague

Well uninstall all the extra gstreamer plugins. Untill my mp3's stopped playing.

Started totem up and it asked for me to install a codec. I selected the Gstreamer Extra Plugins, which appear to install the Gstreamer Ugly plugin. Well still no go with the mp3 play back still the same behavour of no control of the play back.

Installed the ffmpeg plugin, this gave no play back. then installed Fluendo mp3 got playback, but still able to fast forward.

I have reinstalled Hardy but the problem is still here. You shouldn't close this bug... not yet... ;-)

In case anyone is still encountering this problem, I've also recently run into it. I still haven't determined what causes the problem, but my guess would be it chooses some unusual plugin that can decode mp3 but can't handle seeking, rather than a more common one that can do both. I've specifically noticed, it seems only to do it to some mp3 files (those that file identifies as 'RIFF (little-endian) data, WAVE audio, MPEG Layer 3'). File incorrectly identifies a lot of my other mp3s as data or correctly as 'Audio File ... with MP3 encoding', and these totem doesn't seem to have a problem with. I hope that helps in some way...

I have found what doesn't work for me : with Totem, I have to not move the cursor with the left button but to use the middle button by clicking or scrolling the wheel in the progress bar. If you try to move the cursor with the left button several times, Totem crashes. Otherwise it works.

I had exactly the same trouble. This happen when you try to play a movie before a mp3 audio file : with the plugin assistant you will install gstreamer0.10-ffmpeg which will allow you to read mp3 file but not to seek. instead of this, you need to install gstreamer0.10-plugins-ugly and you will be able to seek in the mp3 audio file.

I had the same issue with Karmic. When I first played an MP3 the plugin assistant suggested 3 different packages to install. I only chose to install one of them (the ffmpeg one), and as a result Totem could play MP3s but cannot seek in them.

Having opened 'Ubuntu Software Centre' (the new name for Add/Remove Software), I searched for Gstreamer, and installed the 'Gstreamer Extra Plugins' package. Having installed this, and restarted Totem, the MP3 seeks and plays correctly.

I hope this helps someone else :)
