Bug Description

When running compiz and the display is put to sleep the system completely locks up and I have to reboot with Ctrl+Alt+SysRq+B, this also happens when I put my laptop on standby. If I disable compiz and use metacity everything is fine, so it seems to be compiz crashing the system..

It's a HP 530 with Intel 945GM chipset with integrated graphics and I'm using the integrated LCD and no external monitor.
I'm using the latest release of Hardy with the new X so I think it's using the 'intel' driver...

Release: Ubuntu 8.04 - the Hardy Heron
uname -r: 2.6.24-16-generic
compiz: 1:0.7.4-0ubuntu6

[lspci]
00:00.0 Host bridge [0600]: Intel Corporation Mobile 945GME Express Memory Controller Hub [8086:27ac] (rev 03)
Subsystem: Hewlett-Packard Company Unknown device [103c:30d5]
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller [0300]: Intel Corporation Mobile 945GME Express Integrated Graphics Controller [8086:27ae] (rev 03) (prog-if 00 [VGA controller])
Subsystem: Hewlett-Packard Company Unknown device [103c:30d5]

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. This bug did not have a package associated with it, which is important for ensuring that it gets looked at by the proper developers. You can learn more about finding the right package at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage . I have classified this bug as a bug in compiz.

That are the files you requested.
I've installed the last updates including a kernel update and without the modules from Intel's git repository I have no 3D at all, that's the first xsession-errors file..
After compiling and installing the git driver, 3D is working fine and the second xsession-errors file has no errors..
BUT when I pushed the laptop lid button X froze except the mouse but I had to reset with CTRL+ALT+PRT SC+B and the system completely locked up when I put the laptop in suspend, that's the last xsession-errors file...

Maybe the problem isn't compiz but the intel driver?

Hi there. I experienced this as well. There seems to be AUDIT errors in Xorg.0.log right after a crash, which I am not sure are related. I will attach an example.

While discussing this matter with crdlb in the compiz #, he suggested that replace the compiz "composer" by metacity's composer in gconf's editor key "/apps/metacity/general/compositing_manager".

That reduced the ammount of lockups.

He warns that this is not a proper workaround though because metacity's composer wont take advantage of OpenGL rendering.

I post it here so it might lead to a better solution.

Thanks

Thanks for your bug report. The symptoms provided indicate this is a problem with your video drivers and is being reassigned to the xorg package. For more information on problems with visual effects and video drivers see http://wiki.ubuntu.com/VisualEffects.

[This is an automatic notification.]

A new major version of the -intel driver is now available in Karmic.

This version includes a major reworking of the acceleration
architecture, which resolves a huge number of issues. We do not know
whether it resolves the issue you reported.

Would you mind testing Karmic Alpha-2 and seeing if it is still a
problem? CD ISO images are available here:

  http://cdimages.ubuntu.com/releases/karmic/

If the issue can still be reproduced on karmic, please report here with
your findings, and attach a fresh Xorg.0.log from your test, and we will
be able to forward the bug upstream.

Otherwise, if the bug no longer exists in Karmic, let us know that as
well.

In the off chance you encounter different bugs while attempting to test
Karmic, please report those as new bug reports.

We're closing this bug since it is has been some time with no response from the original reporter. However, if the issue still exists please feel free to reopen with the requested information. Also, if you could, please test against the latest development version of Ubuntu, since this confirms the bug is one we may be able to pass upstream for help.

It seems likely to me this bug is gone; the -intel driver has improved immensely in Karmic and a lot of bugs are being reported as no longer present. So hopefully that's the case here too.

I'm not able to provide logs at the moment, but I'm experiencing this exact same problem on the latest Lucid. I didn't experience it in Jaunty, so it would appear to be a regression.

Thomas, please do not reopen bug reports unless it's your own. Rather file a new bug report, possibly referencing other bugs that are similar.
