Having similar problems here. On startup I get the two panels but the desktop is pitch black. if I restart X (Ctrl-Alt-Backspace) and log on again, I only get the desktop with icons but no panels. If I restart again, it goes normal.

It is strange that I only began to get this problem AFTER I have updated to version 8.04 LTS. I have used 6.04, 7.04 and 7.10 without this ever happening - no changes in hardware.

Searching the web it seems that others were getting this screen black out problem with earlier versions as well.

A few bits of information...
1. Are you using Compiz?
2. What video driver are you using?

Thanks for your reply. The problem occured immediately upon upgrade to
Ubuntu 8.04, but shortly disapeared, after some automatic updates. I am
not sure which update fixed the problem. It never occured aftwards, it
all OK now.

I am not using Compiz and I do no know which is my video driver, I am
using the default video driver insttaled with UBUNTU.
