OK, I rebuilt from my zaptel-1.4.9.2 source using
configure
make clean
make
sudo make install
sudo make configure

and now everything works perfectly.
I had some problems with my network drivers.
I have a realtek r8168, which is still being recognised as an r8169. So I blocklisted r8169, got rid of r8169.ko from my /lib/modules/2.6.24-16-generic/kernel/drivers/net, did a depmod -a and now evreything works again.

Thanks for your report. I'm closing this report due to your last comment regarding this being fixed by a manual install. However don't hesitate to reopen if it's still an issue for you.
