Bug Description

Many users seems to be confused by the fact that the windows partition hosting the Wubi installation is not accessible as the other partitions that have desktop icons.

Such partition is in fact accessible as /host but I assume that nautilus does not automatically create a desktop icon because /host is not in /etc/fstab and it is not listed in the output of `mount` and it does not appear under /media. Only using /proc/mounts would reveal it.

For kde, the relevant files are:

/home/xyz/.kde4/share/apps/kfilepaces/bookmarks.xml

system wide
/usr/share/kde4/apps/kfilepaces/bookmarks.xml

Does that also cover KDE 3.x?

Can this be fixed in Intrepid? Would make so much difference to have an icon on the desktop to get to Windows files.

In kubuntu, creating a bookmark in $HOME/.kde4/share/apps/kfileplaces/bookmarks.xml to /host should fix the problem.

There exist any way to know if a Kubuntu installation is done via Wubi or no? Only users installing from Wubi should get the link to /host

Just installed using Wubi and found /host.

Would like icon on desktop for it but would also prefer for it not to be rwx for all users by default.

Guest logins can't access it so there is probably a way of turning it off for non admin users.

Thank you for bringing this bug to our attention. Unfortunately a paper cut should be a small usability issue that affects many people and is quick and easy to fix. I'm afraid this bug can't be addressed as part of this project.
A paper cut is a minor usability annoyance that an average user would encounter on his/her first day of using a new installation of Ubuntu 9.10.

Martin,

I think this does qualify as a papercut. It affects all Wubi users, which are hundreds of thousands, and it will affect them on their first day of a new installation, since they will most likely look for their Windows files from within a Wubi installation and probably they will have a tough time finding them. The fix would be easy if default bookmarks were a bit more configurable.

While this sounds like a great change for Wubi, Martin is correct in that this does not affect Ubuntu users in general and is not a paper cut.
