Bug Description

On Serval Performance, serp3, FL90, I'm getting a white screen after resuming from suspends now. I only got it once before, but now it's happening on every single one.

I can see the mouse and move it about, but that's about it. Ctrl+Alt+Backspace works. I haven't rebooted my laptop on a while though, and this might be the issue. Is there any output I can provide?

I'll try and not shutdown/reboot 'till then or it might fix itself.

We noticed this during Hardy development; however, it seems sporadic. You can still type in your password with the white screen to unlock the display.

I suspended and resumed three times and it happened on the third try. Each subsequent try resulting in the white screen.

I can confirm this on a Dell Precision M4300 (nVIDIA Quadro FX-360M with nvidia-glx-new), up-to-date Hardy. Suspend/resume cycles work (many times), but at ~90% of resumes I get a completely white screen. I can type my password (sometimes I must click anywhere in the screen to grab focus) and the screen unlocks as expected.

I confirm this but it's not sporadic, it happens almost every time. After typing the password the desktop resumes nicely but a white area in the bottom left corner (I think it's a popup from checkgmail) stays white. Right-clicking it makes it disappear.

No, your bug is different... I get that occasionally too though. For me,
after the laptop wakes up from suspend, the whole screen is white. I don't
see the login window. I can however type my password in fine, and it returns
to the desktop okay.

I can also confirm both scenarios described above:

1) Resume from suspend results in a white screen instead of an unlock dialog. Blindly typing the password at the white screen results in unlocking the screen.

2) Resume from suspend results in a normal unlock screen, then I have a white box in the lower right hand corner of the screen that persists across all workspaces.

I am running Compiz and have Desktop Effects turned on.

Are any of you using AWN? I am, and was thinking that the little box could
be it's result.

I found a method to replicate the problem or at least it works for me (Dell XPS M1330 with nVidia drivers)

Log into Gnome, then hit the power off icon and choose "switch user", on the login screen hit the Options button and choose Quit... my screen goes off, then powers on on black, then goes white with password field in the middle (i can "see" it because of mouse pointer changin from arrow to caret)

The issue there is with the nvidia binary drivers not outputting to inactive VTs which means

- fast user switching can result in a white screen (which still accepts input in the way described above)
- windows drawn on inactive VTs are white boxes
