Binary package hint: gdm
Both of the two supplied gnome face browser login windows will reject a valid (userid, password) pair if the userid is typed in rather than being selected graphically from the list of faces.
Selecting a face from the list and then entering the password works OK.
Not selecting a face and typing in a valid user name will correctly ask for a password but when entered correctly this password will not enable a valid login for the valid userid.
I guess this is a fault in the gdm package.
