Bug Description

I've been been trying to print to a Ricoh Aficio MP 161 printer from Hardy, without success. The job seems to go through to the printer however the result is one page with the words :

%!PS
%% %%
<</Duplex false>>setpagedevice
%!PS-Adobe-3.0
%Creator: cairo 1.6.0 (h.....

followed by about 30 completely blank pages.

While I have only tested this using the Hardy (desktop) live CD, I am fairly confident that this is a general problem, specific to this printer and PPD file. I know of other users in the office who have had exactly the same problem using a fresh install of Gutsy and the above mentioned printer.

One solution is to use the correct PPD file for the Aficio MP 161, not the cups suggested Aficio AP2000 Foomatic PPD. Using the recommended PXLMONO driver (from http://www.linuxprinting.org/foomatic-db/db/source/PPD/Ricoh/PXL/Ricoh-Aficio_MP_161_PXL.ppd) on http://www.linuxprinting.org/show_printer.cgi?recnum=Ricoh-Aficio_MP_161, I used the "Provide PPD file" during the add new printer wizard. This approach works with Feisty and Gutsy. The Hardy LiveCD also works when I do this, so I presume the same goes for a proper install.

I'm not sure how come this PPD file is not included in the openprinting-ppds package by default. I have attached the CUPS error_log file. Note, I tried to print the document twice.

This should be fixed since intrepid because the printer configuration tool system-config-printer automatically downloads the pxlmono PPD from openprinting.org, it would be nice if you could test this on jaunty an report back if it works.

Printers being automatically set up with the wrong driver has also been fixed since jaunty, which shows the printer configuration tool system-config-printer if no exact driver matches to let the user manually select a driver.

Hardy has reached end of life, and this package is not present in later releases. Closing all related bugs.
