Bug Description

After upgrading to Hardy from Gutsy, I cannot change any of my visual settings. For example, when I try and edit my panel menus, nothing happens. When I try and open the hardware configuration to try and see if I can change the hardware driver, nothing happens. When I try and set the Advanced Desktop Effects Settings, nothing happens.

I'm using an NVidia 8600GT, on the AMD64 version of Ubuntu.

Could you try to start these settings programs from the command line?
For example this:
gnome-appearance-properties

This should give you a window where you could set the desktop effects.
Post the information that is printed in the terminal. That might help.

I am able to open the dialog through the command line, but when I try and change the settings, I get the following error:

I found this bug

seems to have fixed it.
