Desktop hangs when date is clicked

Bug Description
i installed ubuntu 8.04 after i dwnloaded it on 24th. later , i also got gstreamer packs to play mp3. thats all i have got as of now.
The small bar that shows date, and is supposed to show the calender when clicked, isnt doing so. rather it remains clicked, no calender shows up, and both the taskbars hang,ie the one above,with start menu, apllications, places etc, and the one below, which shows the windows opened. the windows themselves were working fine, only i had to access them using alt+tab and nothing was happening when i was clicking on them from the taskbar.
the icons on desktop, 1for my windows mtfs drive and another for an applications, were working fine.
to shut down, i presses the shut down switch of my cpu. the shut down options came up on screen[[ shut down, log off, hibernate etc etc]. i chose log of, nothing happened and thereafter nothing happened after i pressed shut down switch a few more times.
