Bug Description

In attempting to update ALSA for the new Thinkpad X300 hardware (https://bugtrack.alsa-project.org/alsa-bug/view.php?id=3837), I eventually discovered that my inability to correct the condition and fix the hardware was due to the fact that - as was the case in 2.6.24-12 (bug: 200338) - the 2.6.24-16-generic packages omit the soundcore.ko module.

Upon implementing this workaround (https://bugs.edge.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/200338/comments/73) to regenerate and reintroduce the soundcore.ko module, sound was restored.

Description: Ubuntu 8.04

Hi sog,

The soundcore module appears to be available by default here:

ogasawara@emiko:~$ modinfo soundcore

filename: /lib/modules/2.6.24-16-generic/kernel/sound/soundcore.ko

alias: char-major-14-*

license: GPL

author: Alan Cox

description: Core sound module

srcversion: 548AA54AF08207316C104F8

depends:

vermagic: 2.6.24-16-generic SMP mod_unload 586

Care to attach the following information - please attach each file separately

* cat /proc/version_signature
* lsmod > lsmod.log
* dmesg > dmesg.log
* sudo lspci -vvnn > lspci-vvnn.log

Thanks.

Are you on the 64 bit kernel or the 32? I'm on the 32, and had issues with soundcore being omitted, while others in the ALSA thread using the 64 bit kernel had no such issues.

Anyhow, the files requested are attached.

The Ubuntu Kernel Team is planning to move to the 2.6.27 kernel for the upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release. As a result, the kernel team would appreciate it if you could please test this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. There are one of two ways you should be able to test:

1) If you are comfortable installing packages on your own, the linux-image-2.6.27-* package is currently available for you to install and test.

--or--

2) The upcoming Alpha5 for Intrepid Ibex 8.10 will contain this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. Alpha5 is set to be released Thursday Sept 4. Please watch http://www.ubuntu.com/testing for Alpha5 to be announced. You should then be able to test via a LiveCD.

Please let us know immediately if this newer 2.6.27 kernel resolves the bug reported here or if the issue remains. More importantly, please open a new bug report for each new bug/regression introduced by the 2.6.27 kernel and tag the bug report with 'linux-2.6.27'. Also, please specifically note if the issue does or does not appear in the 2.6.26 kernel. Thanks again, we really appreicate your help and feedback.

I would love to follow up, but am concerned the 2.6.27 kernel introduces some issues that could corrupt my Intel ethernet firmware. See below.

Hi sog,

Ugh yes, completely understandable on that one. Just for your information we're also tracking that bug in another Launchpad bug report - https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/263555 . You'll probably want to subscribe yourself to that bug report to keep an eye on it's status. Thanks.

This bug, as far as I'm aware, has been fixed. I would check, but no longer have access to X300 unit. It seemed to be addressed, however.
