Bug Description

Binary package hint: cupsys

when printing from Evince or directly from Firefox, HP laserjet 1160 only prints the top of the page. Then a couple of strange marks and the rest of the page is empty. Disabling AppArmor seems to help (the audit message in the end)

The task is left to the printer queue after that.

ah, I was too hasty. disabling AppArmor does not help - only the top of the page gets out :)

Can you try to print the same document with the same application again, but with a lower setting for resolution or print quality (option "Printout Mode" or "Quality")? Do you then get full pages printed? If this is the case we have an upstream driver bug.

hi

I tried with changing the "Printout Mode" to draft, and it printed perfectly fine. Then I changed back to "normal", and it printed fine. Even reboot did not make the problem reappear.

I'll add a comment here again, if (when?) the problem returns.

the problem returned after a couple of days...

(although not as bad as before - a couple of page were printed OK before the problem appeared)

now setting the resolution to "draft" did not help.

I tried to print this file: http://www.wingsgoclub.org/books/StrongerPlayer.pdf
with evince, printing 2 pages on a single page to preserve paper

This time the printer prints the first 2 pages OK with the "high quality option", but for the third paper only one third got out.

When I moved to "draft" quality, the first 4 pages came out OK, but the fifth only contained the top part.

As before, the print job did not vanish from the printer control applet, but stayed in the queue until manually removed.

hi,

it seems I still have a problem. Currently Evince / Firefox / Openoffice do print normally the first page OK (unless there are heavy pictures), but for the second or third only the top comes, and the print job gets stuck. This happens even without fancy filters (like the ones fitting several pages on a single one).

All these problems only started after updating to 8.04 (from 7.10). How can I help debugging this?

I printed a document from OpenOffice. First, it failed as expected, but then I looked at the dialog of OpenOffice Printer Settings (From the Print-dialog, on the right of the Printer name). There was a setting for forcing to PostScript Level 1 instead of the level coming from the driver. Setting that to Level 1 suddenly made the document print properly.

I did not find that setting from the Foomatic/hpijs driver settings, though. Looking at that, I tried to find a new printer driver, which seemed to be found (2.8.2), but the problem still exists.

I tried connecting with USB instead of parport. At least the first few printouts were fine, so I'll buy an USB cable for the printer and see if that solves the problem.

Similar, but intermittent, problem here: After a few pages, printer sometimes starts printing nothing or garbled pages. Might be related to usb problems:

Aaron,

I'm running hplip 2.8.5. I just found the hplip-3.82 version and will
give it a try.

Thanks,
Jerry

I installed hplip 3.9.2 (running hplip-3.9.2.run). It gave me a few warnings, but eventually got through it:

The previous 2.8.5 version of hplip didn't seem to mind. Does 3.9.2 require Qt version 4? I have python-qt 3.5.5. I noticed the confiure was run (by hplip-3.9.2.run) with "--disable-qt4...

I made a kludge by symbolically linking ("ln -s /usr/lib/cups/backend/hp /usr/lib64/cups/backend/hp") just to see what cups would do, and at least I'm back up printing again. I tried printing a large X (300 dpi, full page) and only the top half came out. So it doesn't look like hplip 3.9.2 really helped. I just print in plain or bond media; premium or glossy photo media is where I still have the problem only getting the top portion printed.

Jérôme, can you connect your printer via USB or network and see whether the problem goes away? Seems a parallel port problem for me.
