Bug Description

Binary package hint: nvidia-glx-legacy

Ubuntu 8.04, i386

nvidia-glx-legacy
lspci:
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation NV5 [RIVA TNT2/TNT2 Pro] (rev 15)

Login screen is in wrong resolution, login dialogue is in right low corner, menu in left low corner is not visible (out of visible screen). I guess that screen is configured at 800x600 but login "desktop" is configured for something like 1024x768 or even more. When I login in, resolution is changed to 1024x768 and everything is OK. The only problem is with graphical login dialogue. I use Ubuntu default login. When I change driver to SVGA (??), login dialogue is OK (but I don't have acceleration, etc)

It worked fine in 7.10, it is broken after upgraded to 8.04.

I have the exact same problem after upgrading from 7.10 to 8.04. I have KDE and Gnome desktops can't change to Gnome desktop.

Hi slansky,

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. You reported this bug a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering is this still an issue for you? Can you try with the latest development release of Ubuntu? (ISOs are available from cdimage.ubuntu.com)

If it remains an issue, could you also attach a new /var/log/Xorg.0.log?
Thanks in advance.

The output of lspci -vvnn would also be worth having.

I recently did a clean install of 8.10 Intrepid and didn't have any of the problems I encountered with Hardy on this point.

The issue was not fixed yet. Current Xorg.0.log is attached. Ubuntu 8.04 i386 with the latest updates, on-board Nvidia TNT2 card.

This just happened for me, almost exactly the same as described, I have just started using a new driver (Intel 945 i810). At my first login with the new driver I had this problem

I have the same problem, it kicked in after upgrading from Hardy to Intrepid. Any clues? Let me know what information I can gather and submit to help pinpoint the issue?

Running 9.10 on a system with nvidia graphics (7600 GS) here, and I've noticed that the login screen runs at 1280x960 but pans up to a 1920x1080 screen, even though my default and preferred resolution is 1280x960.

I'm pretty sure this is because I have custom MetaModes specified in my xorg.conf, and when X starts it looks for the "virtual" resolution of the display, and the nvidia driver looks through the metamodes to determine that, always assuming that a bigger dimension is preferred. From my /var/log/Xorg.0.log:

(II) NVIDIA(0): Virtual screen size determined to be 1920 x 1080

Once I've logged in, it goes to my actual preferred resolution, because something further up the stack and after the login screen remembers my settings.

I'm not sure if this explains all the cases reported in this bug, but it might help. How many of the reported cases here have nvidia graphics?

The login screen is something like a user of the system, but I don't know which it is. So if we knew this user, it should be possible to set the display resolution for this user.

I have the same problem and had it with each and every version of Ubuntu. My preferred resolution is 1152x864 at 75Hz. The login screen comes with 1600x1200 at 75Hz (in theory my CRT could do this, but practically it won't sync, so I must change the resolution somehow).

A too high resolution or frequency can cause damages on display hardware!

This bug report was filed against an old version of Ubuntu.
Can you confirm whether this is still an issue in natty?

If you don't mind, it would be very helpful if you could update the bug
report in launchpad to 'Fix Released' if it is no longer an issue for
you, or if it is still occurring under natty, please tag the bug 'natty'
so it's easier for us to track.

Well, I've freshly installed Ubuntu 11.04 and the issue is gone.

Once you've managed somehow to find the display settings (hint: it is hidden very well in the extreme upper right corner, behind the power switch symbol lives a menu) and set it to the right resolution, the login screen appears in the right resolution, too.

I have done so and also installed all updates and activated the FGLRX driver for my ATI graphics adapter. This has reset the screen resolution to maximum and it had to be set again. It worked out perfectly.

bugbot (bugbot) wrote : linux-restricted-modules-2.6.24 is obsolete

Thank you for reporting this issue about a driver from the
linux-restricted-modules package. lrm-2.4.24 was shipped with Ubuntu
8.04 which reached end-of-life for desktop support on May 12th, 2011.

For that reason, this bug report is being closed at this time. I'm
marking it wontfix because what you describe is probably a valid issue,
but there are no plans to work on lrm 2.4.24 bugs further.

The issue may be resolved in a newer version. If not, aside from filing
a new bug report, another angle may be to file it directly with the
driver vendor.
