I also have the same problem even after a fresh install.
I am using Ubuntu 8.04 LTS install from the live CD.

Are you both using the liveCD environment? If so, then this is possibly a duplicate of bug #103933.

It is a fresh install into Hard Disk from a live 8.04LTS CD.
However, I haven't tried in live CD environment.

Hi I've just had the same issue with a fresh install of 8.04 (I was adding the restricted extras package)
Note: I've installed 8.04 from the alternative CD

I figured out why is this happening.

When I first submit the bug report above, I am using a motherboard with VIA C3 Samuel 2, which is a 686-class CPU but WITHOUT the "cmov" instructions.

Now I have upgraded to a new motherboard with VIA C7-D 1.5Ghz, which is a 686-class CPU WITH "cmov" instructions, now the problem gone away.

So I suspect it is another "C3 cmov" problem causing Segmentation fault during installation of openjdk.

Goggling with "VIA C3 cmov", you would able to find out more information concerning this cmov problem.
