Bug Description

Binary package hint: xubuntu-default-settings

Note: This should only affect upgrades and no longer the default install.

After a default (NO customizations) install of Xubuntu 8.04 LTS, I noticed that the icon for Firefox on the top panel looked very odd: it was not the fox/globe but some star-shapped, jagged-edge looking icon. I checked Properties and it was supposed to be linked to:

/usr/share/pixmaps/firefox-png

I went to that directory and that icon was not there, but this one was:

/usr/share/pixmaps/firefox-3.0.png

Setting that icon in Properties DID fix it, of course. I do not know if any other icons are missing or mis-named.

#105493 dealt with the Applications menu but this dealt with the default install on the panel.

Um, yes, this is a VERY low severity/priority bug. (I did a best guess on the package.....)

That should have been "Missing icon on default Xubuntu 8.04 UPGRADE from 7.10"

I am sorry for that oversight.

This is because the panel icon is a personal setting. If you upgrade from one version of Xubuntu to another, personal settings are not overwritten (it would be quite annoying to have all your settings overwritten to defaults, wouldn't it? :). On a clean install, the icon is correct.

Before we dismiss this bug, maybe we should consider adding a symlink?

As Vincent said, this is a configuration issue, so nothing related to packaging.
Moreover, x-d-s shouldn't deal with firefox icon symlink: it's firefox package job, you'll possibly break upgrades from previous releases (since firefox.png was shipped by previous firefox versions), and it'll be a pain to take care of both firefox-2 and firefox-3.0 (maybe using alternatives, but that's too much work).

I guess it's rather a "Won't Fix".

Firefox-3.0 needs to (also) provide its icon at /usr/share/pixmaps/firefox.png like Firefox 2.0 does (so you'll need to setup alternative or something).

We kept the same .desktop filename. At least for gnome that was
enough.

Is this about custom application launchers? Do xfce starters have the
ability to refer to the .desktop file instead of copying the complete
data?

Unfortunately this is not the case and is why individuals who upgrade from previous releases see the icon for the Firefox launcher change to the default icon.

Will this be fixed for the future at least?

I upgraded from 8.04 LTS to 8.10 last night, 10/30/2008. The Firefox icon STAYED this time and did not change to the "odd, jagged edged" icon. I, the author of the bug, thank you all. :)

Well, I am using Firefox 3 and had been before I upgraded. Don't think I
will need to reopen. Have a great weekend..
