Bug Description

Binary package hint: update-manager

1) using up to date 7.10 gutsy gibbon
2)
~$ apt-cache policy update-manager
update-manager:
  Installed: 1:0.81.3
  Candidate: 1:0.81.3
  Version table:
 *** 1:0.81.3 0
        100 /var/lib/dpkg/status
     1:0.81.2 0
        500 http://us.archive.ubuntu.com gutsy-updates/main Packages
     1:0.81 0
        500 http://us.archive.ubuntu.com gutsy/main Packages
-----------
1. I downloaded the amd64 alternate cd image
2.
sudo mount -t iso9660 -o loop /home/phix/Desktop/ubuntu-8.04-alternate-amd64.iso /media/cdrom0
gksu "sh /cdrom/cdromupgrade"

what happens, the distribution upgrade window opens up, and the bar moves, but hangs before reaching completion, on the first step (preparing upgrade, checking package manager)

The window stops responding, and the apt-cache gets locked.

I'm attaching the contents of /var/log/dist-upgrade/

We've tried to recreate this bug report and been unsuccessful. You could really help us out as there some other reports like this by gathering some more information about why it fails. Could you follow the instructions at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Strace and add the strace log file to your bug report? Thanks in advance.

sudo strace -Ff -tt /tmp/tmp.bUlwW10127/hardy 2>&1 | tee strace-hardy.log

lots of no such file or directory errors...

or did you want me to do this?
strace -Ff -tt gksu "sh /media/ubuntu/cdromupgrade" 2>&1 | tee strace-hardy.log

by the way I needed to use my cdrom drive again, so I changed the mountpoint from /media/cdrom0 to /media/ubuntu. Let me know if that introduces new problems.

This looks like it might be a duplicate of #186465

Could you please test if a regular "update-manager" release upgade (without the CD) has the same problem? If so, please run "update-manager --proposed" (the fix is currently building, but should be available very soon) and check if that goes further than step 1. If so, I'm happy to post instrucitons how to use that for the CD based upgrade.

Thanks,
 Michael

Regular update manager has the same problem. I ran --proposed just now and got a server error. Will try again later/

on second try it got a lot further, but I cancelled rather than download the updates. Could you post those instructions for the cd? Thanks
