No more sound with snd_intel8x0/ICH4 on breezy

Bug Description
A recent breezy upgrade took away my sound. I had no manual configuration. There
is no asound.conf.
$ sudo /etc/init.
* Shutting down ALSA... * /etc/init.
failed with error message 'alsactl: save_state:1163: No soundcards found...'.
