Bug Description

Inkscape 0.46 on Windows 2000 Professional.

Steps to reproduce:
1) Run Inkscape.
2) Maximize its window.
3) Click one of the menu item (eg, "File") on the menu bar so that the menu is shown.
4) Move the cursor to another menu item on the menu bar so that another menu is shown. Most probably the original menu will hang in there. That is, either the menu is not destroyed or the screen fail to redraw.

Note that this problem seems to occur only if the window is maximized. In addition to the menu problem, the same issue occurs with the tooltips (displayed when the cursor is over a tool).

I tested it at home (Windows XP at 1024x768) and it works fine. Later I tested it again on my Windows 2000 professional after changing the resolution from 800x600 to 1024x768, it seems to have fixed the problem.

So this bug is probably related to the screen resolution.

John, can you indicate your platform? Are you also Windows 2000? I use Windows XP SP2 and have never had such problems.

Kent, I did see another bug recently where someone was having problems with a lower screen resolution. It may have been on the mailing list. I personally work at 1280x1024.

Confirmed: 0.46, WXP SP2, Athlon XP 1.4GHz, 512RAM.
But only at 800x600. IS badly redraws the workspace on such resolutions (when I start to draw, the litter partly disappears).

I reported this bug (# 212404) about 3 1/2 weeks ago.

I'm running Vista, btw, on a widescreen laptop.

This problem (the screen getting clogged up with menus that don't disappear) seems to be somehow caused by the toolbox being too tall for a 800x600 screen. A workaround is to use smaller icons:

Open Inkscape Preferences (Shift+Ctrl+P). In the "Misc" section, make sure that both checkboxes for small toolbar icons are checked. Close Inkscape Preferences (it may not appear to close due to the bug). Close Inkscape. Restart Inkscape.

Alternatively, hiding the toolbox (View -> Show/Hide -> Toolbox) should also work - all the tools are available via keyboard shortcuts anyway.

By the way, this bug appears to be Windows-specific - the excessively long toolbox causes problems on Linux too (even at 1024x768 or 1280x800, for some reason), but doesn't cause the menu/tooltip/dialog redrawing problem.

This was fixed by some changes that Jon Cruz made recently.

Actually, Inkscape -> Preferences-> Misc (Ctrl+Shift+P) in Ubuntu doesn't have the two check boxes marked when you install the package.
Make sure to check this options before think that you had a bug.

At least it is valid to Intrepid Ibex (8.10) and Jaunty Jackalope (9.04).
