It seems that the problem is at the kernel side and not at the madwifi side:

Is this still an issue with the most recent Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release which has a 2.6.27 based kernel. Please let us know your results. Thanks.

This bug report is being closed because we received no response to the previous inquiry for information. Please reopen if this is still an issue in the current Ubuntu release, Jaunty Jackalope 9.04 - http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/download. If the issue remains in Jaunty, please test the latest upstream kernel build - https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Observed in 9.10, also on Packard Bell EasyNote but with Atheros AR5001x.

I have tried both ndiswrapper and madwifi and neither solves the problem. I am new to Ubuntu but will do my best to supply any information required.

Hi coubi64,

Please be sure to confirm this issue exists with the latest development release of Ubuntu. ISO CD images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/lucid . If the issue remains, please run the following command from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal). It will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report.

apport-collect -p linux 221310

Also, if you could test the latest upstream kernel available that would be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text. Please let us know your results.

Thanks in advance.

With respect that the wifi hardware affected here is now supported by the kernel directly and with respect to:

I set this here to fix released.
