I have an i386 installation of Hardy on a laptop that use opensource ATI drivers and it works fine actually.

Can you also look if you use some non-default options like "vga=" in /boot/grub/menu.lst and if the content of your /etc/usplash.conf file is the same of your actual screen resolution when using X?

there no non standard option in the grub configuration, the issue is there when using the hardy desktop CD too for example

the xorg and usplash graphical resolution are not the same no, would that be the issue?

Thanks for your confirmation. Normally, the /etc/usplash.conf file should have the same default resolution as Xorg. Can you change the values in /etc/usplash.conf to be the good ones and then type "sudo update-initramfs -u". Would be interesting to know if this bug is caused by this wrong configuration and if it still happens when usplash is properly configured.

using the same values for xorg and usplash make it work correctly

Thanks for these informations. If you remember it, can you say which resolution you had in /etc/usplash.conf before you changed it? 640x480? Also can you attach the file created by this command in a terminal so we can know your graphic card? sudo lspci -vvnn > lspci-vvnn.txt

Since this bug is caused by a incorrect screen resolution detection, which is a temporary solution for bug 188764, I set this bug as a duplicate of bug 188764 which should fix all these issues at the same time.
