Bug Description

I was trying out an old 14,400 faxmodem pcmcia card (Megahertz XJ1144) in my
laptop, and it isn't recognized as a modem by the network-admin gui. The modem
doesn't appear as one of the available network device. Looking in the device
manager, it seems the card is known in it as a unknown serial device.

Here is the output from cardctl info:

$ cardctl info
PRODID_1="MEGAHERTZ"
PRODID_2="XJ1144"
PRODID_3="A5"
PRODID_4="PCMCIA MODEM"
MANFID=0102,0005
FUNCID=2

I have the same problem with an Enfora GSM0110. I was going to file a new bug but I found this one which is related.

The problem seems to be with the Texas Instruments chipset because this same card worked fine on a Sony VAIO and I was using Hoary on that one. I bought a new nx6110 and tried it with Hoary and it doesn' t work. I tried Breezy and it doesn't work either.

When the card is inserted all you get in /var/log/messages is:

Feb 19 18:52:00 localhost kernel: [4294787.314000] cs: memory probe 0xa0000000-0xa0ffffff: clean.

The card appears in /sys/bus/pcmcia/devices/0.0
root@alexandros:/sys/bus/pcmcia/devices/0.0# ls -l
total 0
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 0 2006-02-19 19:49 bus -> ../../../../../bus/pcmcia

-r--r--r-- 1 root root 4096 2006-02-19 19:49 prod_id4

Here are the values found:
card_id = 0x0300
func_id = 0x02 (a modem effectively)
function = 0x00
manf_id = 0x01e1
prod_id1 = Enfora
prod_id2 = GSM0110

I am not familiar with the change to cardbus so I can' t help much more. Supposedly this card should be passed to PCI and to USB and it should work with usbserial. Nevertheless it is not seen by PCI, nor does it appear unclaimed by USB.

The kernel mounted yenta_socket and it says that it is effectivly redirected to PCI, per my boot messages as follows:

I suspect that many people should be having this problem because these cards used to work in Hoary perfectly and now are broken in Breezy.

Yes it was working before. Somehow its not anymore. I have a Novatel Merlin U630 via pci in my desktop. The prod_id/man_id are detected perfectly, but its not detected as a modem( generic memory, I think ). I think this should be marked as major since it cuts the chances to update to anyone that doesn't have any other way to connect.

I finally got mine going using a work-around at the following web site.
Before I started, I downloaded/updated pcmcia-cs and wireless-tools through Synaptic.
http://www.s2ii.com/blog/index.php?2006/04/05/78-wifi-sous-ubuntu-dapper-drake-64-bits-avec-un-acer-aspire-5024
It is in French, which I speak. If you want to try and have any translation-related trouble, let me know. The instructions are for specifically AMD64 Acers, which is what I have. And BTW it made my Belkin wireless G 125 work, and it is pretty fast.

I have one of the XJ1144 cards. If a developer would like to have the card in order to solve the problem I would be glad to ship it to them.

My clipper com worked in RH5.1 never been recognised on my nx6110 with breezy onwards. I assume due to this post http://lists.infradead.org/pipermail/linux-pcmcia/2006-April/003451.html and other related that no pcmia device would work. I also use a nx6110.

Launchpad Janitor (janitor) wrote : This bug is now reported against the 'linux' package

Beginning with the Hardy Heron 8.04 development cycle, all open Ubuntu kernel bugs need to be reported against the "linux" kernel package. We are automatically migrating this linux-source-2.6.15 kernel bug to the new "linux" package. We appreciate your patience and understanding as we make this transition. Also, if you would be interested in testing the upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release, it is available at http://www.ubuntu.com/testing . Please let us know your results. Thanks!

The Ubuntu Kernel Team is planning to move to the 2.6.27 kernel for the upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release. As a result, the kernel team would appreciate it if you could please test this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. There are one of two ways you should be able to test:

1) If you are comfortable installing packages on your own, the linux-image-2.6.27-* package is currently available for you to install and test.

--or--

2) The upcoming Alpha5 for Intrepid Ibex 8.10 will contain this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel. Alpha5 is set to be released Thursday Sept 4. Please watch http://www.ubuntu.com/testing for Alpha5 to be announced. You should then be able to test via a LiveCD.

Please let us know immediately if this newer 2.6.27 kernel resolves the bug reported here or if the issue remains. More importantly, please open a new bug report for each new bug/regression introduced by the 2.6.27 kernel and tag the bug report with 'linux-2.6.27'. Also, please specifically note if the issue does or does not appear in the 2.6.26 kernel. Thanks again, we really appreicate your help and feedback.

As the original reporter of this very old bug report, I have to report that while I still have access to that laptop (currently running Hardy), I don't have access to that pcmcia card (or any pcmcia cards for that matter). So I cannot test to see if this problem is still present in Hardy, or if this new kernel would solve that specific problem.

Hopefully someone else here has one of these XJ1144 cards.
