This is actually due to an incompatibility between eperl and perl-base
5.8.7-5, which only happens on powerpc. If you need a workaround,
you can recompile eperl or downgrade perl-base. I am investigating
this issue just now, and it is likely that I will ask for help soon ;)

I did not receive help from powerpc folks, so I am unable to investigate
this issue and am closing this bug, eperl 2.2.14-13 works fine on powerpc.
Thanks for your report.
