Freeze on KDE logout

fglrx-installer (Ubuntu)

Bug Description

Currently using:
Kubuntu Hardy Heron
KDE 3.5.9
Linux 2.6.24-16-generic
xorg-driver-fglrx 1:7.1.0-8-3+2.6.24.12-16.34 (ATI Radeon 9800 Pro)

When I try to log out of KDE, shutdown, or restart, my screen goes black. In order to get rid of the black screen I have to hit Alt+SysRq+R then Alt+SysRq+E to kill everything. If I'm shutting down or restarting, the process will then continue by itself. This is extremely annoying. It happens with all users on the system including newly created ones. I have had this problem for quite a while, so I do not think it is restricted to this kernel version.

If there are any files or information I can provide, please let me know.

Using as well:
Kubuntu Hardy Heron
KDE 3.5.9
Linux 2.6.24-16-generic
xorg-driver-fglrx 1:7.1.0-8-3+2.6.24.12-16.34 (ATI Radeon 9800 Pro)

Got the same promblem here on Kubuntu Hardey with an ATI Radeon 9800 and the fglrx driver, but only in combination with compiz. I tested several compiz startup parameters without success. Currently I am using:
 "/usr/bin/compiz.real --ignore-desktop-hints --replace --indirect-rendering --strict-binding --indirect-binding --replace core ccp"

Starting compiz with the "ati" driver succeeds but is very slow.

Same for my system too, but slightly different Hardware:

Kubuntu Hardy Heron
KDE 3.5.9
Linux 2.6.24-16-generic
xorg-driver-fglrx 1:7.1.0-8-3+2.6.24.12-16.34 (ATI Radeon X1550-64bit)

Strg+Alt+Enft / Strg+Alt+Del does work either to get him to shutdown.

Same problem. Kubuntu 8.04 Hardy (32 bit), KDE 3.5, no Compiz, fglrx driver.

Same here, fglrx, no Compiz, 3.5.9, 32 bit.

I actually had this before (Edgy?), but it went away in Feisty and Gutsy.

Same here on two (32 bits) systems : one Hardy KDE4 version (fresh install, Composite enabled in xorg.conf), and one Gutsy w. KDE 3.5. They both have their fglrx driver installed through the latest ATI installer.

Confirm! Same Problem!

Kubuntu 8.04 (Hardy)
KDE 3.5.9
Linux 2.6.24-16-generic
fglrx (ATI Xpress200)

Problem seems to be the fglrx proprietary driver.

Workaround1: Kill the XServer with Ctrl - Alt - Backspace after it hangs. Shutdown should complete as usual.
Workaround2:
edit: /etc/kde3/kdm/kdmrc
"sudo nano /etc/kde3/kdm/kdmrc"

In Section:
# Core config for local displays
[X-:*-Core]

change
# Default is 15 (SIGTERM)
#TermSignal=15

to
# Default is 15 (SIGTERM)
TermSignal=9

this also kills the xserver. Not pretty, but working!

Try Ctrl + Alt + Del, it works for me while Ctrl + Alt + Backspace does not.

Same problem.

Kubuntu 8.04 (Hardy)
KDE 3.5.9
 Linux 2.6.24-17-generic
 fglrx (Radeon X1200 Series)

THIS SOLUTION DOES NOT WORK FOR ME:

 edit: /etc/kde3/kdm/kdmrc
 "sudo nano /etc/kde3/kdm/kdmrc"
In Section:
 # Core config for local displays
 [X-:*-Core]
change
 # Default is 15 (SIGTERM)
 #TermSignal=15
to
 # Default is 15 (SIGTERM)
 TermSignal=9

The following link
http://tsdgeos.blogspot.com/2008/04/fglrx-blocking-xorg-on-logout.html
identified a problem with the file /etc/ati/authatieventsd.sh.

The suggestion is to update the change by changing

XDM_AUTH_MASK=/var/lib/xdm/authdir/authfiles/A$1*

to:

XDM_AUTH_MASK=/var/run/xauth/A$1*

This solution worked for me.

@Scott Lewin: Ctrl + Alt + Del doesn't do the trick, either, on mine.

@JEMH: I will try your solution next time I reboot.

I first thought it didn't work, but of course it can only work on the SECOND reboot obviously.

Thanks to Stefan Carslöv for finding it out, Albert Astals Cid for blogging about it and JEMH for posting it here!

Oh, and after all, Ctrl + Alt + Del did work, I had to press it four times, though.
