Bug Description

Hoary(5.04) i386

The above packages (needed by the openadsl driver project
(http://sourceforge.net/projects/openadsl) appear to be broken. apt output follows:

# apt-get install libatm1-dev
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree... Done
Package libatm1-dev is not available, but is referred to by another package.
This may mean that the package is missing, has been obsoleted, or
is only available from another source
E: Package libatm1-dev has no installation candidate

# apt-get install atm-dev
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree... Done
Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have
requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable
distribution that some required packages have not yet been created
or been moved out of Incoming.

Since you only requested a single operation it is extremely likely that
the package is simply not installable and a bug report against
that package should be filed.
The following information may help to resolve the situation:

The following packages have unmet dependencies:
atm-dev: Depends: libatm1-dev but it is not installable
E: Broken packages

Thanks for reading,

If you did install Hoary from CD, you will need to update your sources.list in order
to have access to the main archive via network. The libatm1-dev package is simply
not on the CD, because there is not enough space to include all possible -dev debs.

With network repositories enabled, the package install just fine.

Oops ! sorry, missed one of the commented lines.

OTOH, trying to build a network driver using packages that only exist on the net
can be a bit of a pain.
Can I suggest that for this reason consideration be given to including as many
packages as possible that are likely to be
of use establishing a network connection are included on the CD in future releases ?

Cheers,

Mark

Yes we do understand, but for that we do suggest to file appropriate bugs asking
for the drivers to be included.

The suggestion is good, but CDs are already full. There is no way to smack
development packages in there :(
