Confirming this report as I ran into the same issue. Hardy upgrade failed, but deinstalling and then reinstalling succeeded.

Upgrade from 7.10 i386 to 8.10. I used iso image of alternate CD mounted as loop, upgrade process started manually from running 7.10.
